Cold Weather Motorcycle Riding Tips

Oct. 31 2019 Miscellaneous By ___

Just because the temperature’s dropping and there’s more precipitation heading our way, doesn’t mean that this is the end of motorcycle riding for the year. Plenty of riders keep their bikes handy, so on those nice days that roll through, there’s a chance to clock in some extra miles.

But even when the sun’s shining, it can be frigid, which is why preparing for motorcycle riding in cold weather is an important step to take this winter. Barnes Harley-Davidson has provided some tips to get you started. For more advice, stop by one of our locations in Langley, Victoria, and Kamloops, British Columbia.

Wearing the Right Gear

Even at slower speeds, the wind you create from riding can make it feel like it’s significantly colder than it says on the thermometer. The best way to keep yourself warm is to wear the right gear. Even if you’re not toasty, the right clothes can prevent chafing and getting so cold that it’s difficult to control your bike.

We recommend layers. Layers are better for insulation and you can take one off if you start to get too hot. We recommend as many as two or three layers before your jacket on top. Keeping your core warm is going to be your body’s main priority, so you should make a conscious effort to make it your priority as well.

Speaking of which, as your body tries to keep your core warm, it pulls heat from other areas, including your extremities. That’s good for survival, but you need your fingers and feet to stay dextrous. Warm gloves and thick socks can help with this, as will sturdy riding boots. You can also look for heated handgrips to add to your bike.

Other great winter-specific gear can include heated clothing, for days when it’s particularly cold. If it’s wet out, you’ll want to make sure your top layers are waterproof. And, of course, always wear your helmet.

Check Your Tires

When the temperature starts to drop, it can affect tire pressure. Even if it’s only a small amount, a little bit can make a big difference in things like fuel efficiency and safety. Before you hit the road, do an air pressure check and adjust as needed. If you go riding often enough, you might want to upgrade to winter tires, which can give you better traction.

Take Care of Your Body

Even when you’re wearing all the right gear, it’s important to read your body’s signals and take good care of it so you can continue to enjoy your riding experience. Always eat a warm, healthy meal to give your body the fuel it needs. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and take breaks as needed. You’ll probably be working overtime trying to fight the normal fatiguing aspects of riding while also keeping your body warm, so if it’s a longer trip, expect to make a few stops.

Road Conditions

Just because you can ride during winter, doesn’t mean you always should. Make smart decisions for yourself and other commuters by taking road conditions into account. Riding in the rain isn’t new, but if there’s a possibility of snow and ice, you might want to take something that puts a roof and four walls around you. The best way to prepare for the whole day is to check the forecast before you head out.

Also, adjust your riding style as needed. Watch for slick spots and road hazards from snow clearing, like salt and gravel. Slow down if necessary and always put safety first.

With the right strategy, you can enjoy riding your Harley-Davidson motorcycle all year round. You can also stop by Barnes Harley-Davidson to find the right bike for you or a loved one this holiday season. You’ll find us in Langley, Victoria, and Kamloops, British Columbia.
